Adjustable Gastric Banding
BioEnterics® LAP-BAND® System or Obtech Medical AGB®

.
Adjustable Gastric Banding (AGB)
This procedure involves attaching an inflatable band around the top portion of the stomach and tightening it like a belt to form a small pouch that serves as a new, much smaller stomach. After the procedure, the diameter of the band around the stomach can be adjusted by a physician by adding or removing saline (salt water). No staples are used in this procedure, which is relatively new in the US.

Like other restrictive procedures, AGB may not achieve significant weight loss. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an AGB system in 2001 that can be put in place with a laparoscope (a small thin tube with a video camera attached) rather than with an open incision for patients who are morbidly obese, as indicated by a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more.

Developed to aid in long-term weight loss, the Adjustable Gastric Banding System has been used by leading laparoscopic surgeons worldwide to treat severe obesity. Sustained weight loss with the Adjustable Gastric Banding System is achieved by reducing the capacity of the stomach.

The BioEnterics®
LAP-BAND® System

The silicone adjustable band component of the Adjustable Gastric Banding System is placed around the upper part of the stomach, forming a small gastric pouch to limit and control the amount of food you eat and slow the emptying process from the stomach into the intestines. Limiting food intake and slowing the stomach emptying process results in weight loss.

The Adjustable Gastric Banding System has been designed for laparoscopic placement, which offers the advantages of reduced trauma, reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay and quicker recovery. No cutting or stapling of the stomach is required, and there is no need to bypass portions of the stomach or intestines. If for any reason the Adjustable Gastric Banding System needs to be removed, the stomach generally returns to its original form.
This surgery is totally reversible, obviously by another new operation.
