Silastic Ring Vertical Gastroplasty

.

Restrictive gastric operations, such as vertical banded gastroplasty (VGB),serve only to restrict and decrease food intake and do not interfere with the normal digestive process.

Because the size of the stomach is reduced so dramatically, this type of procedure is referred to as a restrictive procedure.

This procedure uses a combination of staples and a band to create the pouch.

In this procedure the upper stomach near the esophagus is stapled vertically to create a small pouch along the inner curve of the stomach.

The outlet from the pouch to the rest of the stomach is restricted by a band made of special material. The band delays the emptying of food from the pouch, causing a feeling of fullness.

After gastric stapling or banding, a person can eat only about three-quarters to one cup of food. The food must be well-chewed. Eating more than the stomach pouch can hold may result in nausea and vomiting.

VBG has been the most common restrictive operation for weight control. Both a band and staples are used to create a small stomach pouch in the upper stomach, designed to restrict food intake and prolong satiety.

Vertical banded gastroplasty, is one of the two major types of operations recognized by the NIH (National Institute of Health) for the treatment of clinically severe obesity. It is a purely restrictive procedure with no malabsorptive effect. The goal of this procedure is to severely restrict the patient's capacity to eat certain foods.
This operation of a restrictive type can be reversible in a certain time, by a medical indication or if it is the wish of the patient, where it will be practiced, by a surgery a connection between both
reservoirs.
